April Challenge - What you saw today!

DSCN3656
I visited a pair of new city parks today and decided this would be the picture to post. It's of a baby gallinule and his/her dad. Mom was busy building a new nest for a new clutch of eggs. The Common Gallinule inhabits marshes and ponds from Canada to Chile, from northern Europe to southern Africa, and across Asia to the Pacific. Vocal and boldly marked, the species can be quite conspicuous, sometimes using its long toes to walk atop floating vegetation. There are more park pictures under the cut.

Wooden Sculptures: The park had tall wood poles driven into the wetland area for a boardwalk and then proceeded to cut them off wasting tje rest of the wood. The director suggested leaving the end ones full sized and then had an artist come in and carve the poles. Here are some of the results. I think they turned out quite well.

It's really two parks. They were sister properties that were put together with a similar theme. Each one has a children's area - one a playground and the other a small water park (didn't show that one). Each has a wetland area and exercise tracks for neighborhood visitors. The bathrooms and picnic table shelters are the same design in each. They really do compliment each other.

I liked being able to catch parent and offspring together. The little one had several siblings but they were here and there and everywhere while mom was busy with her nest building.

That last one was a wetland area. The developers discovered there was a natural muddy place and built up the surrounding area to allow for the water to collect there. It's going to get even better as it fills in though it looks pretty good now.
