June Challenge (owls)

The Great Horned Owl is another regular resident of South Florida (as well as all of North American and parts of South America). It is a night owl so is rarely spotted in the light of day. It's also called the tiger owl and is compared to its European cousin, the Eurasian Eagle-owl. Both have similar habits though the Great Horned is much larger. I probably have a picture of one somewhere but I can't find it. I remember a park guide pointing one out hiding above us in the trees. It's location (favorite perch) was marked by the owl pellets it left on the ground below. Owl pellets are made up of bits of fur, feather and bones from the prey the owl swallows whole. The owl can't digest those so it coughs them back out. I found this picture which was cute and looked like it could have been in Florida. The tree the mom and baby are nesting in looks like a cypress.
