One of the field trip for my last gardening conference took us to the home of an amazing talented and dedicated gentleman. His name is Pearl Fryar and he grew up the son of cotton share-cropper. He has no formal education or training in topiary shaping or maintenance or in horticulture. He watched one 3-minute trimming demo and then started visiting a junk piles of local nurseries. He bought a home in a neighborhood that wasn't thrilled at the time to have a black man move in and wanted to do something to impress them. He definitely did. This is the result. I must add that walking onto his property was like entering a Dr. Suess book. (I'll post a few examples. The rest will be under the cut for those interested)

Note: Pearl has inspired his neighbors to follow his example so everyone has topiaries though not to the extent of Pearl Fryer. Mr. Fryar was asked to produce topiaries for the center of town, a local IHop and an art museum.

Note: The city changed the house address from 165 to 145 after the number topiary had been growing for four years. Pearl choose not to change it.

What a work must have gone into that garden! It's lovely although I'm not sure I'd like a garden like that myself.
It's still cool though! :)

I would not like to do the amount of trimming and cutting that he did. Of course he now has a program for teen/young adult interns who help with the maintenance. It is quite wonderful. There are flower beds too though I didn't show them and lots of little pocket garden to wander around in. It is hard to show the depth of the garden.

So very clever. And I should think it takes years and years of patience!

I imagine it has taken quite a few years to get to the stage it is now. Such dedication.
