Last stop on the South Carolina tour

What do you do when you realize that your 8am flight is really 8pm but you still need to check out of your hotel by 11am? Lucky for me I realized my flight time mistake before the trip so I had a little forethought. I had about 6 or 7 hours to kill in downtown Columbia, S.C. and it was a Sunday morning/afternoon so limited places open. Something peaked my interest in the local guide book - Sally Salamander. It seems that some time ago the city tourist people got together and used the state's amphibian as a symbol for a strange scavenger hunt. There were supposed to be 10 salamander ornaments with corresponding number plates in a 4-5 blocks radiis around the capitol building. It began and ended at the convention center. So I was up for a challenge. Armed with a couple of bottles of water, sunscreen and my little map I started out. My hotel was just across the street from two of the salamanders. I surmised that the little amphibians were supposed to identify historical buildings or locations of significance. Of the ten I found five, three remained hidden and two still had the plates but the salamanders had "walked away". I was at a bit of a disadvantage. I only had a small map about the size of a credit card that had no exact location listed. Later I found a brochure online and discovered that I had been in the right places but the salamander were missing. It was quite a tour of the city. I got a ton of walking in that day. Between the walking tour and the flights back I had 23'000 steps but midnight. Here's a few pictures of the little salamanders. There's more under the cut showing buildings and other interesting sights I came across that day.(I do hope the goat leaves them alone).

I saw some strange things on my walk. Flamingos on the roof, a giant rooster, a smiling tree and a chain holding two building together. I found evidence of the reason for missing salamander like missing buildings and other things like a bank vault in the lobby of a hotel and a metal meter maid who reminded me of Robocop. I bet no one talked back to her. It was quite a day. If you have any questions about an individual picture just give out a shout.

What a fun way to spend a day.

It was. I saw/heard other things as well - church bells, people playing Pokemon, a Karate class and a group giving out free food and clothes to the homeless. I ate lunch at a little sandwich shop on the university campus and saw this huge white dog named Bear. Very appropriate.
