Back from DragonCon

Well, it is over. I'm still exhausted. Need at least one more good night sleep to get back to sort of normal. This had to be the most unique convention of my history of attending DragonCon. There was a little of everything. DragonCon as a convention had the usual costume pageantry and crowds and lines everywhere but add to that a few special surprises, three hotel rooms, family drama and a little fangirl moment or two. It was the best. I'll post a few favorites of the costumes and put a more drawn out description of the events (under the cut) for those who wish to hear the whole tale. Oh yeah, the costumes worked out great though I only wore 3 out of the 4. (That me with the Ewok)

So the convention started with our second hotel. My sister didn't think staying with them overnight this year would be an option. Our mom has been getting worse with her memory and her attitude. She was the family drama. She had a bad episode after we left. Apparently all my sister said was for my mom to finish her water and she flipped out. It was bad enough that my sister called emergency and mom was taken to the hospital. Turns out she should have finished her water because she had an infection that probably helped with the episode. So I got several calls over the weekend about the situation and to listen while my sister cried and poured her heart out. It was heartbreaking. I thought for awhile we were going to have to scrap the convention and go back to stay with mom. We did spend another evening with her because frankly she didn't remember our previous visit. She seems so calm when I'm there. Mom only seems to give my older sister grief. The other part of the family drama was the new grandchild who is sick along with his daddy who is still waiting for a liver transplant. The fun never ends around our family.

So we had the drama, now for the three hotels. The first was the overnight near my sister's so we could visit mom. The second was the one we booked for the convention. It was a bit of a walk to the event but we liked it the last time we stayed there so we picked it. My daughter was less than thrilled. The neighborhood had gone down a little, some guy let himself into the room while the girls (daughter and friend) were there alone and we had the police banging on the door next to us in the middle of the night. Daughter was ready to leave though at that moment there was nowhere to go. Everything was booked solid as far as we knew. Then a high school friend came to the rescue. She works for one of the host hotels and knew nothing about our experience at our current hotel. She called me the next day and asked if we wanted a room. It was yeses all around. No question about it. We explained to the hotel about the room situation and they let us out of our reservation. We happily and quickly packed up and moved into a deluxe room with a voucher for next year's reservation and concierge level privileges at the same price as the dump hotel. WOOHOO! I'm still thanking my friend for the wonderful thing she did.

Now onto the fangirl moment - my daughter and I got to meet two former member of our favorite boyband - NYSNC (Joey Fatone & Christ Kirpatrick). My daughter posted the pictures over on FB. If you can't see them and would like to see them let me know. The guys were super friendly and offered to take more than the original photo even asked my daughter to jump into one of the them. She also posted a picture of me with Craig Parker. The man loved my outfit. I hadn't intended to go as an elf that day we went to the Walk of Fame but our schedule changed and so...well. Anyway Craig said I looked FABULOUS! I love that man! Visiting with him is always a treat.
Here's a few more pictures for those of you who got through all that.

I'm sorry for all the drama, but how great the room worked out. LOVE your outfit, you look fantastic! I'll dodge over to FB as soon as the boss leaves.

The room reservation made it so much better. No worries about next year. I really like that. Not planning on giving up the room this time. Of course the last time it couldn't have been helped. I couldn't go to DragonCon and my daughter's wedding.

Well, she could have gotten married at DragonCon :)

We did consider that possibility but we figured some of the family wouldn't go for it. Her theme of Mario Brothers was prefect for the con.
She did get engaged at DragonCon though.

It's hard when there are memory problems with someone you love. It can be a challenge dealing with it on a everyday basis.

I'm glad the room worked out though. And no worries for next year! that's just great!

Love all the costumes! Looks like a lot of work and attention is put into them. Yours is fabulous!

I worry every time I visit (since I live so far away) that mom won't recognize me. My sister and mom really need a break from each other. They both need to get out on their own.

It's a HUGE relief to have next year's reservation. I hate being stuck in one of the overflow hotels and having to walk so far plus it is infinitely safer to walk around at night if we are inside the main three host hotels which are attached to one another by well-lighted walkways and of course there is always people around night and day.

I just posted pics of all my costumes, even the pirate fairy that didn't get worn at the con. I'll wear at to Ren Fest this year. The thigh-high boots got ditched for the shorter flat boots after a mad dash back to the hotel room but they did make the pictures first.

All the costumes are amazing, people really go to town with it! And you look absolutely fabulous! I hope your Mom and sister are feeling better now.

Yes, they do. Some of these costumes look movie quality. It's amazing. I borrowed a few pics from hubbie that I missed when my camera battery went dead in the middle of the day. I'll post a few more later.

Mom is back home with my sister and I haven't gotten any frantic calls from sis since I've been home so I guess they are back to the normal daily thing. I need to call this weekend. In fact, I need to call more often. It's amazing that mom rarely acts up much when I'm around. One would think my sister was making it all up but then mom says something really rude and sarcastic and I just know it's all true. *sighs*
