Phoenix - Day Two

So I took off for the Desert Botanic Garden and the Hole-in-the-Wall (Pagado Park). The botanic garden was amazing! I never imagined that there were that many variety of cactus and succulents and of course desert flowers. The place was huge with like eight different sections to wander through. I tried to take pictures of the species signs so if anyone wanted to know what kind of cactus it was I could tell them. I saw an awful lots of cactus that I had grown in dish gardens at one time or another but these were HUGE compared to the small versions I remember. There was not a lot of color. Most of the cactus blooms were spent but there were a few flowers and most of the aloe was in bloom.

There were some animals there though I wasn't fast enough to catch a shot at my favorite one - the roadrunner. The guy darted out of a garden exhibit and headed straight for a staff exit. I catch a glimpse of him/her for a second or two before it shot across the parking lot and into the brush beyond. I was excited just to have caught a glimpse of the cool bird - big bird. I did photograph a few others - cotton-tail rabbits, quail, hummingbirds and pairie dogs.

And there were some bits of color. It would be a garden without them. I wish to return some time and see the cactus flowers in bloom. That must be spectacular. Some of the flowers I knew except under a different common name and others were brand-new.

I'm going to save the Hole-in-the-Wall for tomorrow. It needs a separate post. I hope these aren't taking up too much room for everyone.

One of the pics of cactus reminds me of The Mouth of Sauron...(I bet you know which one. The right one on the top.)
Shame you could not take any pics of the roadrunner. *LOL*
To be honest, I've never seen any real ones...

Thanks for sharing such interesting pics!

OMG I see it now. Yes!

That bird moved too fast. Just like the cartoon version. This was the first one I have seen. It was quite an experience.

Very pretty. I'm jealous, though, I've never seen a live roadrunner

It was a short look. They are pretty fast. Didn't even get a chance to focus my camera. It was pretty cool though.

The cactii are amazing - I love them.

You could put the photos behind a cut if you were worried about the room they take but they seem to fit okay to me.

Gorgeous! Picture 2 and 6 look like something Peter Jackson would use in a movie. Intriguing and weird!

Love the desert animals as well!
*hugs*

You know someone else said the same thing. Thought #2 looked like the mouth of Sauron. I wondered if the cactus in #6 was deformed or damaged to make it grow that way. The lower part looked like a normal saguaro cactus.
