100 Things that make me smile

I have a Queen of the Night (night blooming cactus) that I inherited from my MIL. After spending the weekend cleaning up the backyard I discovered a bud ready to open. It opened last night in the rain but it was still beautiful and smelled heavenly. The pictures are a combination of mine and hubbie's. It only blooms once and it will be gone in the morning. This is the first time we have seen the blooms open. There are two more blooms developing on another branch.

It's as big as my hand (or was). It was closing this morning. Can't wait for the other two buds to develop.

The flower is as big as my palm and was still half open this morning. I'm excited about the two other buds we spotted last night. I need to undercover the whole plant and see what condition the rest of it is in but I won't move it until those other two flowers open. Won't risk having the buds snap off.

Absolutely stunning!

It's no wonder I've never seen it before if it only blooms at night! ;)

Seems a shame doesn't it? That such beauty only shows up under the cover of darkness. This was my first experience, too. I'm really looking forward to the other two buds. Plan to uncover the plant this weekend and see how much of it there is. Most of it is currently covered with vines from something else.
